Lauftin True was a self-taught painter who worked in the 1990s. His gouaches celebrated fruits and vegetables as tabletop objects, with a wonderful sense of color and scale. They have a unique, whimsical feeling about them. Not surprisingly, he was from Bass Ridge Road, Elkhorn, Kentucky, where he grew his subjects in a small garden.
In the 90s, his work could be found in flee markets, several country store, several galleries, and in outsider art shows both in New York and Chicago. In addition, Kentucky 7, K.S Art, The Outside Gallery, Toad Hall. Thanks are due to Kathy Shorr who discovered and promoted him. Aging, Lauftin stop painting to focus on improving his home and patch of land.
It is unknown how many painting he made through 1990s, but likely a few hundred. Today, there remains a personal collection about 25 to 30 paintings.
